Why tummy time matters
The AAP recommends supervised tummy time starting from the first day home from the hospital. Tummy time builds the neck, shoulder, and core muscles your baby needs for rolling, crawling, and eventually sitting and walking.
Regular tummy time also helps prevent flat spots on the back of your baby's head (positional plagiocephaly), which can develop when babies spend too much time on their backs.
Always supervise tummy time. If your baby seems upset, try shorter sessions and work up gradually.
